MASUMI ISHIKAWA
Masumi Ishikawa is a contemporary ukiyo-e painter who advances the classical Japanese woodblock tradition through a distinctly modern perspective. In 2000, he apprenticed under the sixth-generation master Utagawa Toyokuni VI. Following his mentor’s passing, Ishikawa independently developed a signature style that fuses traditional compositional rigor with contemporary cultural narratives, redefining the relevance of ukiyo-e in the global present.
His official works for Star Wars and collaborations with internationally acclaimed artists including David Bowie, KISS, and Iron Maiden have received wide recognition. Several of his works are held in the collection of the British Museum.
Recent projects include a ten-work commissioned series for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, large-scale spatial installations for Hankyu Umeda Main Store, and anniversary collaborations with Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra and The Yellow Monkey. His package design for the mineral water brand Kyoto Ukiyoe Water, presented at Expo 2025 Osaka, further expanded his international reach.
Ishikawa continues to undertake international commissions and cross-disciplinary collaborations, positioning ukiyo-e as a dynamic platform for cultural dialogue in contemporary art and global branding.
